Kenya has awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to China Communications Construction Co. (CCCC) for a major $2.9 billion modernization and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), East Africa’s busiest aviation hub.
The massive upgrade project will include the construction of a second runway alongside a brand-new passenger terminal. Construction is scheduled to commence this month, utilizing funding from Kenya's newly established National Infrastructure Fund alongside strategic commercial loans.
The rapid expansion allows Kenya to scale its capacity amid growing regional competition from Ethiopia and Rwanda. CCCC will leverage its extensive local footprint- which includes major railways, a stadium, and a convention center- to deliver the strategic infrastructure project.
