Construction on the proposed Dangote oil refinery in Lamu, Kenya, is officially set to break ground this October. Highlighting improved construction efficiencies and stream-lined project execution, industrialist Aliko Dangote confirmed that capital costs have been successfully revised down from an initial Sh2.2 trillion to approximately Sh2 trillion.
Designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the facility will be modeled after Dangote’s flagship complex in Lagos, Nigeria. Once active civil works begin, this large-scale build will establish East Africa’s largest processing hub and the second-largest refinery on the African continent.
Upon completion, the strategic facility will significantly boost regional industrial development by supplying refined petroleum products to Kenya and neighboring markets, including Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The milestone infrastructure project will enhance regional energy security while substantially curtailing dependence on foreign refined oil imports.
